What began as a simple decision to join the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, as a general member has grown into an extraordinary journey, one that concluded with the honour of serving as its Vice President for the year 2024-25. But Rotaract was always more than just service. It was where I found my university family, where I gained recognition within the faculty, where I developed my soft skills, and where I learned to face challenges head-on. Most importantly, it taught me that life isn’t easy for everyone.
Simply put, it was a journey filled with countless ups and downs, invaluable life lessons, and unforgettable memories, all interwoven with the spirit of community service. From getting project approvals to finding funds, organizing the logistics, and successfully concluding each initiative, nothing came easy. But through it all, we learnt. We grew.
Over the past two years, I’ve chaired several projects that not only enriched my experience but also allowed me to meet amazing people from all corners of Sri Lanka to across the world. We exchanged cultures, tried new cuisines, and even picked up new languages. I guess that is the magic of Rotaract.
From “SLAMM 2023” to “Behind the Bars”, I learned that there’s so much more to life than what we see on a daily basis. Every single project I was a part of taught me a new lesson that helped me move forward.
One of the most memorable experiences was “MAATHA 6.0,” a signature project of RACFOL. It was the most meaningful project I have co-chaired so far. From raising funds to finding and supporting expecting mothers, it was a tough journey. But six months later, seeing those newborn babies using the items we donated, it was heartwarming. That, to me, is the true essence of Rotaract.
Another massive project I co-chaired was “Spookzilla 2.0.” This was the one that made me realize my own potential. I had that “Wow, I did this!” moment, and it felt amazing.
As part of the RACFOL EXCO 2024–25, I believe we rewrote the club’s history by hosting the most successful installation ceremony to date. The 13th Installation Ceremony, in which I was a co-chair, broke away from the traditional format. We introduced a fresh, new culture to installations. That project proved to me that teamwork truly makes the dream work. With the right people and dedication, nothing is impossible.
The recent project, “Behind the Bars”, was another deeply impactful experience. Getting permission to visit a prison wasn’t easy at all. But that rare opportunity opened the eyes of every participant. As law students, it was a chance to see and learn things that will undoubtedly shape our future careers.
These are just a few of the projects I’ve chaired or been a part of. Each one added something valuable to my Rotaract journey that included rare experiences, lasting memories, and meaningful impact.
I want to take this moment to thank my RACFOL family for supporting me in every project and helping turn ideas into realities. I’m also incredibly grateful to my friends who stood by me through the chaos, offered help when I needed it most, and never gave up on me.
This journey wasn’t easy. But looking back, I’m proud of myself for holding on, for pushing through, and for successfully leading every project I was entrusted with. It gave me the opportunity to show what I’m capable of when it comes to leadership and organization.
A huge shoutout to everyone who believed in me and trusted me with challenges. As a team, I believe we were able to make a genuine difference, addressing the gaps within our community and leaving a lasting impact.
And that, truly, is what Rotaract is all about.
