A Morning of Compassion: Donating Fresh Fruit Baskets to Cancer Patients at Apeksha Hospital

On the morning of August 6, at 8:00 AM, our team from the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, arrived at Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama. Our goal was simple but meaningful—to bring a little happiness, care, and support to cancer patients who are bravely going through difficult times. This project was very special to us because it was the first time we launched Project Apeksha, and this was its first phase.

We visited three wards—1, 2, and 17—where we had the opportunity to personally hand over fruit baskets to the patients. In total, we donated 44 fresh fruit baskets. Each basket included five types of fruits: watermelon, papaya, avocado, bananas, and local oranges. These fruits were chosen based on the hospital’s advice, as they are healthy and provide important nutrients to help the patients stay strong. To make the gift more special, we also attached a small “Get Well Soon” tag to each basket, sharing a kind message and good wishes.

In addition to the fruit baskets, we also served thambili (king coconut water) to the patients. Our volunteers cut and prepared the coconuts on the same day, making sure everything was fresh. It was a simple gesture, but one that added even more care to the visit. With the help of the nurses and medical staff in each ward, we were able to give the items smoothly and respectfully.

A total of 20 volunteers took part in this project. They worked with kindness and energy throughout the day. Seeing the smiles on the patients’ faces and hearing their words of thanks made us feel truly moved. It reminded all of us that even a small act of kindness can bring light and happiness into someone’s day.

As we left the hospital, our hearts were full. We were proud to be part of something meaningful and hopeful. Project Apeksha is just beginning, and this first phase showed us how much of a difference we can make by showing care. We look forward to continuing this journey and doing even more in the future.
