As part of our monthly Senehase Nagam initiative, we visited the Karuna Elders Home in Boralesgamuwa on the 30th of April 2026. This visit was especially meaningful because it was not just another monthly outreach; this time we arrived with the spirit of Avurudu, carrying with us not only festive food, but also warmth, love, and heartfelt appreciation for the elderly people.
As soon as we arrived, we were greeted with bright smiles and open arms. It was nice to see how excited they were to welcome us. We spent time talking with them, listening to their stories, and sharing our thoughts. In these conversations, I was reminded of how difficult it can be for people to process their emotions and how many silently struggle with their feelings they carry inside.
Life is uncertain and brief, which makes kindness, compassion, and human connection even more important. Moments like these remind us that love, warmth, and empathy should not be reserved for special occasions. They should be part of the way we treat one another every day.
We brought Kavum, Kokis, and many other Avurudu delicacies to share with them, and they truly enjoyed the food and our company, even though Avurudu came a little late for them this year. Along with the treats, we also shared Avurudu cards as a small but sincere gesture to show that they are seen, valued, and deeply cared for.
We also had the chance to speak with some of the elders about their youth, the things they used to do back then, and even engage in conversations about politics. These exchanges were not only enjoyable, but also deeply meaningful. They reminded me that, regardless of age, everyone longs to be heard and understood. Senehase Nagam, as the name suggests, is about spreading love, warmth, and care to those who need it the most. Through visits like these, we are reminded that community service is not only about giving material support but also about giving time, attention, and emotional presence.
I am thankful to have been part of this meaningful journey, and I hope we continue to carry this spirit of love and care into every community we serve.
