An Educational Visit to the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka

We visited the Court of Appeal with the Rotary Club to gain a first-hand look at Sri Lanka’s appellate justice system. The visit began in the courtrooms, where we observed live proceedings and watched judges and lawyers carry out the day’s work with precision and decorum. Seeing legal argument and judicial decision-making in action brought classroom concepts to life and offered a vivid reminder of the rule of law at work.

After the hearing we were warmly received by Mr. Sanjeewa Fernando, Registrar of the Court of Appeal, who kindly gathered our group for an informal discussion. He outlined the role and responsibilities of the Court of Appeal, explained procedural stages in appellate matters, and described how cases move through the appellate system. Members of our group asked thoughtful questions about appeal grounds, timelines, and access to justice; Mr. Fernando answered each question clearly and patiently, drawing on practical examples from the court’s work.

The visit was both educational and inspiring. It highlighted the importance of procedural fairness, the careful weighing of legal arguments at the appellate level, and the professionalism required of court officers and legal practitioners. For the Rotary Club members, especially those interested in law and civic matters, the experience deepened our understanding of the judiciary’s role in safeguarding rights and resolving disputes.

We are grateful to Mr. Sanjeewa Fernando and the Court of Appeal for welcoming us and for providing a candid, informative session. Visits like this strengthen civic knowledge and encourage engaged, informed citizens who appreciate the institutions that uphold justice.
