LetsTalk: Building Confidence Beyond the Classroom

The transition into law school brings opportunities that extend far beyond academic learning. Recognizing the importance of communication, advocacy, and self-confidence in a law student’s journey, the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, introduced LetsTalk, a two-phase awareness project designed primarily for first-year law students.

The first phase, conducted in collaboration with the Gavel Club of the University of Colombo, focused on developing foundational public speaking skills. The session explored effective speech structuring, presentation techniques, overcoming stage fear, and building confidence. Through the guidance and experience shared by members of the Gavel Club, participants gained valuable insights into communicating their ideas clearly and confidently.

The second phase turned the spotlight towards competitive debating and mooting, featuring a panel discussion with the Nuremberg Moot Court 2026 Champions. The speakers introduced participants to the fundamentals of debating and mooting, explained how students could begin their journey in these fields, and shared experiences from their own path to success. Their insights offered participants a practical understanding of the preparation, commitment, and skills involved in competitive advocacy.

Together, the two phases created an accessible introduction to three essential areas of professional development: public speaking, debating, and mooting. By connecting first-year students with experienced speakers and competitors, LetsTalk sought to bridge the gap between theoretical legal education and the communication and advocacy skills required beyond the classroom. The project also encouraged students to explore extracurricular opportunities, develop their confidence, and take their first steps towards becoming more effective communicators and future legal professionals.

Through LetsTalk, the club reaffirmed its commitment to creating meaningful learning opportunities that empower students to discover their potential, express their ideas, and grow beyond the boundaries of academic study.
