Every person is entitled to equality and equal protection from law. Similarly, military personnel need legal aid for their civil matters. Thus the third phase of the project ‘legal update’ was planned to serve the people who served the country.
According to the survey done to identify key civil issues of military personnel, our team came across frequent issues on marriage and divorces. Hence it was planned to provide pro bono on marriage and divorces in Sri Lanka. The legal officer of the army camp; Major Priyangi Jayasundara, volunteered to provide legal aid. A former alumni of the Faculty of Law University of Colombo, she was enthusiastic to provide guidance.
The legal aid camp was held in the Ambepussa military camp premises on the 16th of October 2022 from 9.30 am to 11.30 am. The team of 10 decided to visit Ambepussa by train. After a rather tiresome week of lectures, it was a great opportunity for our Rotaractors to relieve their stress by enjoying the journey and take a break from their mundane routine while also getting an opportunity to enhance their soft skills.
The passion and the resilience of the team, the enthusiasm and willingness of the resource person; Major Jayasundara and the support provided by other officers were what drove the program to a successful fruition. As the camp was providing legal aid in a in a military camp, it was both an interesting and different learning experience to the previous ones.
The team of Rotaracters were able to observe firsthand the structure of the organization , the hierarchy and daily process in a military setting while providing services to the targeted group. It was reassuring and inspiring to witness how those who serve our nation strived to conduct themselves with dignity, courtesy and integrity.
Following in the ideals expressed by Sonia Sotomayor of the US Supreme Court when she stated ‘we educated, privileged lawyers have a professional and moral duty to represent the underrepresented in our society to ensure that justice exists for all,’ the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Law put their resources to the best of use to ensure that those in service who protect our rights and freedoms are also provided with the opportunity to inquire into their concerns regarding their own rights and duties.

සෑම පුද්ගලයෙකුටම සමානාත්මතාවය සහ නීතියෙන් සමාන ආරක්ෂාවක් හිමි වේ. ඒ හා සමානව, හමුදා නිලධාරීන්ට ඔවුන්ගේ සිවිල් කටයුතු සඳහා නීති ආධාර අවශ්ය වේ. මේ අනුව ‘Legal Update’ ව්‍යාපෘතියේ තුන්වන අදියර සැලසුම් කෙරුණේ රටට සේවය කළ ජනතාවට සේවය කිරීමටයි.
හමුදා නිලධාරීන්ගේ ප්‍රධාන සිවිල් ප්‍රශ්න හඳුනාගැනීම සඳහා කරන ලද සමීක්ෂණයට අනුව, විවාහ සහ දික්කසාද පිළිබඳ නිතර ගැටලු අප කණ්ඩායමට හමු විය. එබැවින් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ විවාහය සහ දික්කසාද පිළිබඳ ප්‍රොබෝනෝ ලබා දීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇත. වාසනාවකට හමුදා කඳවුරේ නීති නිලධාරියා; මේජර් ප්‍රියංගි ජයසුන්දර නීති ආධාර ලබාදීමට ඉදිරිපත් වූවාය. කොළඹ නීති පීඨයේ හිටපු ආදි ශිෂ්‍යාවක් වූ ඇය මගපෙන්වීම ලබාදීමට උනන්දු වූවාය.
නීති ආධාර කඳවුර 2022 ඔක්තෝම්බර් මස 16 වන දින පෙරවරු 9.30 සිට 11.30 දක්වා අඹේපුස්ස හමුදා කඳවුරු පරිශ්‍රයේදී පැවැත්විණි. 10 දෙනෙකුගෙන් යුත් කණ්ඩායම දුම්රියෙන් අඹේපුස්ස නැරඹීමට තීරණය කරන ලදි. තරමක් වෙහෙසකර සතියක දේශන වලින් පසු, අපගේ රොටරැක්ටර්වරුන්ට ගමන රස විඳීමෙන් ඔවුන්ගේ ආතතිය දුරු කර ගැනීමටත්, ඔවුන්ගේ ලෞකික දින චර්යාවෙන් විවේකයක් ගැනීමටත්, ඔවුන්ගේ මෘදු කුසලතා වැඩි දියුණු කිරීමට අවස්ථාවක් ලැබීමට මෙය හොඳ අවස්ථාවක් විය.
කණ්ඩායමේ ආශාව සහ ඔරොත්තු දීමේ හැකියාව, සම්පත් පුද්ගලයාගේ උද්යෝගය සහ කැමැත්ත; මේජර් ජයසුන්දර සහ අනෙකුත් නිලධාරීන්ගේ සහයෝගය වැඩසටහන සාර්ථක ප්‍රතිඵලයක් කරා ගෙන ගියේය. මෙම කඳවුර හමුදා කඳවුරක නීති ආධාර සපයනු ලබන බැවින්, එය පෙර පැවති ඒවාට වඩා රසවත් මෙන්ම වෙනස් ඉගෙනුම් අත්දැකීමක් විය.
